A 20-year journey to where Koroberi is today

In 1999, the Disney classic “Tarzan” premiered. Spongebob first hit television. A gallon of gas cost $1.22 (seriously) and singer Ricky Martin released the classic song "Livin’ La Vida Loca."

Fittingly, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team bookended our first 20 years with FIFA World Cup wins, taking home the top prize in both 1999 and 2019.

And most importantly, Koroberi was born.

Koroberi was founded by Bruce and Kathryn Olive in Carrboro, North Carolina as a new agency specializing in B2B marketing.

Koroberi is a phonetic spelling of the Australian Aboriginal word “corroboree” – which is a mystic tribal dance performed in times of war, celebration and dreamtime storytelling ceremonies. The name was chosen as a metaphor for the tribal nature of our team, our creativity, talent for telling client stories and ability to fight for clients in a challenging marketplace.

From the outset, Koroberi’s primary goal was to provide a bridge for more traditional B2B clients eager to transition to a modern, efficient and cost-effective internet-based communication. We arrived at a particularly interesting time for the industry – right as the new millennium was about to begin, and with it, a whole new era of technology-based marketing.

In the early 2000s, it was a time of transition, with companies migrating from glossy corporate brochures to the world wide web. Websites were in vogue but companies still wanted to hold on to some legacy print-based products and tools.

The age of automation was also upon us and the rush to appeal to engineers was in full swing through our first decade. Koroberi was tasked with both appealing to highly technical audiences and breaking down specialized products and services to a general audience. This challenge of breaking through complexity continues to this day, and requires staff members well-versed in the major forces that affect industry today, like e-commerce, robotics, IoT and data.

Today, the K-team is composed of marketing, branding and media strategists who focus on quality deliverables and client service. We’re a young group with deep experience in highly specialized industries, offering a unique blend of marketing expertise, industry knowledge and fresh thinking to help clients standout in competitive yet sometimes staid industries.

We’ve also moved a few times, but we just couldn’t leave behind the booming Triangle area of North Carolina behind, hitting Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham and since November 2018, Raleigh! It’s been quite a couple decades. Who knows what the next 20 years of Koroberi have in store?
